About this Specialization

In this three-course specialization, you will engage in the process of examination, self-reflection, and action to advance equity, diversity, and inclusion (DEI) through a global lens. In the first course, you reflect on how your identity and background have shaped your thoughts, actions, and relationships with others while exploring the historical narratives and power structures that have shaped your environment. Next, you begin to build a toolkit that can be leveraged to create a transformational change through leadership in the workplace. Finally, you will work through what is next with what you have learned through this specialization and how to make lasting change for yourself and your interactions with others. This specialization can be taken for academic credit as part of CU Boulder’s Master of Engineering in Engineering Management (ME-EM) degree offered on the Coursera platform. The ME-EM is designed to help engineers, scientists, and technical professionals move into leadership and management roles in the engineering and technical sectors. With performance-based admissions and no application process, the ME-EM is ideal for individuals with a broad range of undergraduate education and/or professional experience. Applied Learning Project

Throughout the specialization, learners will engage in self-reflection to learn more about themselves and how their identity has shaped their thoughts, actions, and relationships with communities other than their own. Learners will then apply their knowledge to develop a DEI plan for their industry, including unbiased job descriptions and job interviews, the creation of affinity groups, and assessing DEI benchmarks.

Thriving organizations strive for equity at all levels. Dynamic global DEI initiatives strengthen connectivity within individual teams and foster cross-cultural collaboration and mutual understanding while encouraging the inclusion of employees from all regions. Broader global relations aside, there also exist country-specific ethnic dynamics that make DEI a critical conversation. Global dynamics present a possible risk (and opportunity) for organizations. In this course, we will explore the complex topics that shape your views and ideas by exploring historical narratives while working on your journey towards improving cultural competence.

Dynamic global DEI initiatives strengthen connectivity within individual teams and foster cross-cultural collaboration and mutual understanding while encouraging the inclusion of employees from all regions. Broader global relations aside, there also exist country-specific ethnic dynamics that make DEI a critical conversation. Global dynamics present a possible risk (and opportunity) for organizations. In this course, we will develop a more profound knowledge and understanding of diverse groups by hearing actual accounts from various marginalized populations and adopting an approach of first looking inward, then confronting ignorances, biases, and stereotypes of marginalized populations, and ending each lesson with a personal reflection.

In this course, we will focus on how successful DEI initiatives advance business goals, the historical context for DEI work, and definitions of several key terms and concepts. In addition, we will wrap up the importance of creating, leading, implementing and measuring the success of DEI initiatives in the workplace

Is this course really 100% online? Do I need to attend any classes in person?
This course is completely online, so there’s no need to show up to a classroom in person. You can access your lectures, readings and assignments anytime and anywhere via the web or your mobile device.
How long does it take to complete the Specialization?
The three courses of this specialization are each five weeks long. If you complete the content at the expected pace, it will take 15 weeks to finish.
What background knowledge is necessary?
No background knowledge is necessary to begin the specialization. We do recommend, however, that learners new complete the courses in sequence.
Do I need to take the courses in a specific order?
Yes. The course team recommends that learners complete the courses in sequence.
Will I earn university credit for completing the Specialization?
No. However, this specialization is part of the University of Colorado Boulder's Master of Engineering in Engineering Management program. Learners can upgrade from the non-credit version, pay tuition, and earn credit towards the completion of the ME-EM degree.
What will I be able to do upon completing the Specialization?
Upon completing the specialization, you will be able to understand how your identity has shaped your thoughts, actions, and relationships with communities. And, you will be able to develop a DEI plan for your workplace, including unbiased job descriptions and job interviews, the creation of affinity groups, and assessing DEI benchmarks.
